Colours and Films

There are numerous factors that determine whether or not we like a film; usually the script, the performances, the photography, the speed, the soundtrack. But in the art of film-making there are aspects, we may overlook at first, which can strongly affect what we feel when we are watching a scene. For example: Colours.

There is a field of study called "psychology of colour" which deals with analysing the sensations that are produced in people by the perception of different hues. Some filmmakers use this to their advantage; for example, in a given scene they generate certain impressions in the viewers with the choice of their palette. The predominance of a colour is associated with different sensations:

  • Red: Red is often used for scenes where they want to transmit passion, life, energy, strength; but also violence, bloodshed.

  • Orange: Orange is often associated with childhood, innocence; but also barrenness, heat.

  • Yellow: Yellow is used to highlight optimism; but also disgust or cruelty.

  • Green: Green is spring, youth, hope; but also lie, envy.

  • Blue: Blue is used to convey calm, intelligence; but also sadness, aloofness.

  • Violet: Violet implies wisdom and maturity; but also worldly riches, decay
